Abstract:

The refined model for lamprey hemoglobin combines highly idealized geometry along with good agreement of observed and calculated structure factors. In this regard, lamprey hemoglobin is among the best of refined models of the globin fold, showing a root-mean-square error in atomic co-ordinates of approximately 0.15 A. We have incorporated alternate conformations for 11 sidechains is probably common in most proteins and, although a large investment of effort and time is necessary to model disorder, the resulting model is a better description of reality than a single conformation with falsely inflated thermal parameters. The current model is adequate for molecular replacement studies of other crystal forms of lamprey hemoglobin, as well as for investigations of possible models for the aggregated states of lamprey globins.
