The pilot study described in this report, a part of the Basic Skills Resource Center resesrch component, was undertaken to investigate the possibility of providing learning strategies instruction in the context of the Armys English as a second language ESL program. A formative evaluation of strategies training, which would facilitate the acquisition of speaking and listening skills in the acquisition of English as a second language, suggests that such training can be incorporated into the DLIESL Defense Language InstituteEnglish as a Second Language curriculum.
