Software multiple-backend database systems provide high-performance, cost-effective database management support for systems with very large and growing databases. One backend computer, called the backend controller or, briefly, controller, controls transaction processing of the remaining backend computers, i.e., backends, and interfaces with the host computers. These systems are designed to provide performance-gain and capacity-growth potential by increasing the number of backends connected to their controllers. This thesis develops a comprehensive methodology for the performance evaluation of multiple-backend database systems. It also applies this methodology to develop a test-database set and test-transaction mix for the evaluation of the multi-backend database system, MBDS. Author
