Abstract:
This report contains information relating to the proper use of a shiphandlingship bridge simulator by marine pilots for training purposes. It identifies a number of pilot skills that should be considered for acquisition or enhancement via simulator-based training. It provides information regarding the three major elements of the training system the simulator design, the training program structure, and the instructor qualifications. This information is presented in a format to assist the potential user of simulator training at the marine pilot level in the identification and evaluation of the benefits to be derived from a given training system. The U.S. Coast Guard has indicated that it plans to use these guidelines for approving ship simulator training courses for partlial licensing credit.
