Abstract:
This report describes work carried out to optimise the composition of 3 14 NiCrMoV steels through a stoichiometric balance of the carbon content with the carbide-forming elements Cr,Mo and V. Reduction of the carbon content to the stoichiometric level gives a steel having a very high Charpy upper shelf energy, but the grain refining effect of the carbides is lost and the impact transition temperature increases. An optimised steel containing a slight excess of carbon has been developed that gives a better strengthtoughness combination than the commercial steel. Author
