The St. Louis Area Support Center ASC is a 895-acre facility located in Madison County, Illinois, on the American Bottom floodplain at the confluence of the Mississippi River and the Chain of Rocks Canal. No previous archeological investigations have been conducted on the St. Louis ASC and no archeological sites are presently known to exist within facility lands, although parts of the levee system may be of historic value. Given the known archeological resource base for the area it is possible that either prehistoric or historic sites may occur within the ASC. However, there has been extensive surficial modification of the facility, either as filling or cutting. Significant intact deposits may still be preserved beneath construction and fill areas as well as in relatively unmodified areas.
