Industrial Western economies depend on the continued access to the minerals of South Africa and the free passage of ships through the waters around South Africa. The Soviet Union has increased its influence in the area. This study examines United States policy toward the region, some of the developments in South Africa and the possible participation of the Department of Defense within the framework of the policy.
