Abstract:

The major developments in understanding the mechanisms of stress-corrosion cracking SCC in Al-Zn-Mg and Al-Mg alloys are briefly reviewed. In particular, evidence for the involvement of hydrogen embrittlement in the SCC mechanisms is addressed. Specifically, the effect of the loading mode on SCC, the role of grain boundary segregation in cracking, and our overall view of the mechanisms of SCC are discussed.
