This paper is organized so that the reader familiar with the basic principles of fiber optics presented in Section II may proceed directly to Section III where general military applications are discussed. The advantages and disadvantages of fiber optics usage, including communications security and reliability appear in this section. Each of the services has unique C3I requirements and Section IV addresses each services needs in separate subsections. Section V examines future C3I trends and research areas.
