Abstract:

The study documented in this report provides a simple means of combining a two-dimensional foundation with a beam-column structure for use in preliminary design and analysis. The report demonstrates that a foundation can be investigated and formed independently of the structural beam-column matrix. Two procedures for developing and interface matrix, which represents a linear elastic semi-infinite half plane, are presented. The terms needed to construct the interface matrix are dependent on values of Poissons ratio and the modulus of elasticity of the foundation. Details on the two procedures, necessary terms to generate interface matrices, and example problems are provided.
