Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis is to localize buried objects in water-saturated sand by variable incidence acoustic pulse reflections. In particular, thin aluminum plates are used to model the buried objects. The sound speed and the depth of the overlying sand layer are predicted by using the T sq minus X sq and the ray parameter methods. The experimentally computed results have an average 3.5 depth error. The calculated speed of sound in the water-saturated sand layer differed by 8.1 between the T sq minus X sq and the ray parameter methods. Keywords Acoustic pulse reflections.
