An experimental technique is described to determine the disturbance to the response of one microphone due to the presence of a second identical microphone. The measurements were carried out in a free-field environment using plane waves incident normally onto the microphones and protection grids were used. The microphone diaphragms were coplanar and the spacing between the microphone centres was varied from one to sixteen microphone diameters. Amplitude deviations up to 1 dB and phase deviations up to 7 degrees have been measured. The magnitudes of the disturbances have been found to be in good agreement with theory. Author
