Evaluation of Surface Exchange Coefficients from Mildex Ocean/Atmosphere Mixed Layer Data.

This thesis evaluates a coupled oceanic-atmospheric boundary ABLOBL model which provides single-station prediction capability relative to wind stress and oceanic mixed layer depth observations. The model is initialized and verified using data obtained during the 1983 Mixed Layer Dynamics Experiment MILDEX. Model computation of friction velocity and oceanic mixed layer depth are compared with observations from both atmospheric frontal and non-frontal synoptic situations. Favorable results of model predictions are achieved although in some cases they are slightly higher than observed turbulence derived values of . Mixed layer predictions are very close to the observed except in frontal regions.
