The Military Message Experiment MME was established to evaluate the utility of an automated message handling system in a military environment. The technology was derived from automated message handling system in a military environment. The technology was derived from automated systems then operating on the ARPANET, a computer-communications network developed by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency DARPA. Three developers, experienced in building computer programs which handled messages, were each asked to construct a prototype system. Special design features were required to make the systems useful to military users, and to take into account the special problems imposed by the need to conform with military security regulations. In February 1977 the three prototype systems were evaluated Sigma, produced by Information Sciences Institute ISI, was chosen for the experiment.
