Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for certain classes of distributions to be closed under mixtures. The relevant classes are defined in terms of antistarshapedness or dispersiveness. One of the main results characterizes distributions with log concave densities. A basic tool in the analysis of univariate survival data is the quantile plot.
