Abstract:

EPR electron-paramagnetic-resonance and ENDOR electron-nuclear-double-resonance are extremely useful techniques because they measure the interaction between a paramagnetic center and those atoms surrounding the center. Thus they give information on translations and rotations in the crystal on a microscopic scale. Whenever a paramagetic center is introduced they are not usually present in the pure material one must consider the possibility that the effects seen when the sample is taken through a phase transition may be more the properties of the introduced defect rather than those of the host crystal. It is for this reason that centers introduced by radiation damage and those produced by doping should be used and compared whenever possible. Several radiation damage centers in ammonium sulfate, deuterated ammonium sulfate, and lithium sulfate are investigated. These results give insights into the nature of the hydrogen bonding in these materials, Computer software that has been developed in these studies is discussed.
