The task envisioned for the present effort was, using methodology similar to that employed in the Centers for Disease Control CDC study, to ascertain whether leukemia, other cancer, or any other fatal disease had occurred excessively among participants at atmospheric tests of nuclear weapons other than SMOKY. In particular, it was desired to examine shots other than SMOKY in the PLUMBBOB series and to include participants at other than test series, both at the NTS and at the PPG. The CDC study had found similarly increased risks of leukemia among SMOKEY participants whether judged by the incidence of or mortality from that disease. It was decided to rely on ascertainment of mortality through the use of existing VA records systems.
