Ice Fog as an Electro-Optical Obscurant

The extinction of visible light and infrared radiation at wavelengths of 3.5 and 10.6 microns by ice fog is considered utilizing theoretical concepts and historical experimental data. The reliability of the spherical approximation of ice fog for Mie calculations is examined and judged adequate for forward scatter situations but limited for side and backscatter applications. The relative efficacy in penetrating ice fog as a function of size distribution is evaluated for the wavelengths considered. Keywords include Electromagnetic radiation Ice fog and Obscuration.
