Abstract:
This thesis addresses a relational database design for a Brazilian Air Force Flying Unit Operational Control System. After defining the problem and specifying requirements, an overall system analysis was performed using Decision Support System Theory. A top-down planning for decision support systems and databases, and a functional analysis were performed to identify potential environmental database applications. Using a canonical approach, a file management systme was mapped to a database conceptual model and afterwards to a database logical model. A prototype Dialog Generator Management Software was implemented through menu driven programs, using the dBASE II DBMS version 2.1 running on a Z-80 microcomputer. The database partial implementation was performed using the INGRES DBMS version 7.10 running on a VAX 11780, from which advanced queries were retrieved. Finally, an investigation of optimum query retrievals from databases is performed using Artificial Intelligence methods and techniques. Originator-Supplied Keywords include Relational Databases, Decision Support Systems, Database Query Retrieval, Artificial Intelligence, and Natural language system.
