Abstract:

This report presents the results of calculations of collision-induced optical gain in vibrationally-excited mixtures of deuterium or hydrogen deuteride with a buffer gas. Gains of up to 0.07cm are predicted for gas mixtures at high pressure and reduced temperature. Significant gain is predicted over a frequency range of approximately 2100cm to 2700cm wavelength range 4.8 to 3.7 micrometers for D2 mixtures and over the frequency range 2600cm to 3300cmwavelength range 3.8 to 3.0 micrometers for HD mixtures. These results indicate the feasibility of operation of collision-induced-dipole lasers which are continuously tunable over the above frequency ranges. Keywords include Deuterium, Hydrogen deuteride, Optical gain.
