Abstract:
The Old Pumping Station Dam, a stone masonry structure, is owned by the Town of Ayer. It impounds Cold Spring Brook, forming Balch Pond. Balch Pond has a storage capacity of 60 acre-feet at elevation 126, top of dam. Inflow to Balch Pond from Flannagan Pond and Snady Pond is restricted by railroad and roadway embankment culverts. According to Corps guidelines, this dam had a small size classification and a low hazard potential. There are no habitable structures near the Cold Spring Brook which could be damaged by the maximum failure outflow of 575 cfs. The downstream brook channel and flood plains would easily dissipate this flow.
