Abstract:

During the race across France after the break out of Normandy, the pace was slowed before the city of Matz. BG James A. Van Fleets 90th Infantry Division provided a spearhead for the XX Corps advance. The crossing of the Moselle River in November in the face of extensive enemy fortifications provide valuable lessons in the conduct of hasty river crossing operations under fire.
