A Gas Gun Impact Tester for Solid Gun Propellants

A gas gun impact tester has been developed to evaluate the fracture response of gun propellant. Grains are impacted against a steel plate at velocities ranging from 30 to 120 ms over a temperature range of -50 to 60 degrees C. The fracture damage is evaluated using a semiquantitative parameter based on the visual appearance of the grain after testing. More quantitative evaluation methods are being developed, but fracture response differences have been determined between M30 and JA2 gun propellants using the current evaluation procedure.
