Abstract:

The effects of dark adaptation of light leaking around the edges of a spectacle frame worn under ambient light levels of 0.4 and 15 foot-Lamberts for 0.5 to 5 minutes were measured. Younger observers were virtually unaffected by light leaks in ambient illumination of 0.4 fL. However, after 5 minutes in ambient illumination of 15 fL, they required about 45 seconds to recover complete dark adaptation, and observers over the age of 40 required nearly three minutes.
