This report examines the potential for using electromagnetic radiation microwaves in the processing of materials. The feasibility of enhancing the coupling of incident microwave energy for materials processing is investigated with emphasis on ordinarily low-loss materials, e.g., polymers. A review is made of the coupling of electromagnetic radiation to nonconductive solids. The mechanisms for coupling microwaves to these solids are identified and variables which can influence dielectric loss are reviewed. A survey of the literature on microwave processing of materials is given. Finally, a discussion is presented on modifying materials so as to enhance coupling.
