Abstract:

This study represents an interpretive social history, encompassing the first three quarters of the twentieth century, which is primarily directed toward the areas to be specifically affected by the Smithville Mo. Lake and Dam Project. The data sources are twenty-six long-time residents of the immediate impact zone who possess memories of life along the Little Platte River using quota sampling selection, the respondents were interviewed and the recorded tapes were then transcribed. The report organizes the responses in terms of topics covered by the informants, selection of which is primarily a result of the extent of data recovered in the represented categories. Originator-supplied keywords include Clay and Clinton Counties, Floods, Black settlement, Farming, Sorghum production, Mills, and Schools.
