Abstract:
This report summarizes the research performed by USCInformation Sciences Institute ISI from July 1, 1982, to June 30, 1983, for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the National Science Foundation, and the Air Force Systems Command, Rome Air Development Center. The research is focused on the development of computer science and technology, which is expected to have a high DoDmilitary impact. ISIs broad spectrum of research covers the areas of communication technology, VLSI, software production technology, and user-friendly systems. During the past year, there has been a sustained effort to enhance the quantity, quality, and focus of ISIs research in order to anticipate and meet emerging national needs and for DARPA-supported work, there is special emphasis on emerging DoDmilitary needs. A continuing effort is underway to enhance the research base to track the growing impact of the information sciences on DoD and the country. High- bandwidth communications, knowledge-based and expert systems, and advanced extensions of the MOSIS system, related to major changes in manufacturing technology, represent new or augmented research programs.
