Exposure of the retina in an awake, task-oriented animal to various duration flashes from an Argon laser produced immediate changes in visual acuity. The recovery from this exposure varied from several minutes to months depending upon the duration and energy of the flash as well as the extent of retina involved. The threshold for producing a permanent alteration in the animals visual sensitivity was significantly below the MPE derived using morphological criteria alone.
