The purpose of the research performed under this contract was to eliminate the influence of collisions on the infrared multiphoton excitation of poly-atomic molecules as much as possible, and to study the exchange and distribution of energy within an isolated polyatomic molecule. Extremely rapid equilibration of absorbed energy among the different modes was observed. New experiments involving time-resolved Raman spectroscopy of infrared multiphoton-excited molecules have, for the first time, provided more direct, quantitative information on intramolecular energy transfer.
