The purpose of the program reported here is to study the interaction of beams of energetic several keVs electrons and ions with the upper atmosphere by optical sensing from onboard the rocket from which they are injected. Particle trajectories, return current paths, development of plasma sheaths, and other collective beam-plasma interactions that result in instabilities and discharge phenomena in the vehicles vicinity are considered. The photometric and imaging instruments complement those making direct in situ measurements of particle densities and energy distributions, rocket potential, and spectrums of electromagnetic radiation in the charge-injection experiments.
