Abstract:

Expert typists have acquired a highly practiced motor skill. A typical professional typist has accumulated over 10,000 hours of practice. Expert typists are much faster than novices, but in addition, their performance is qualitatively different in many ways from novice performance. During acquisition of typing skill, there is a general shift from cognitive to motor limits on performance. Expert typing is characterized by parallel mental processes that overlap in time, overlapped hand and finger movements, a decreased load on conscious cognitive resources, and reduced variability fo the interstroke intervals.
