Abstract:
Recent news stories in both the printed and electronic media have shown the simplicity of bypassing computer security controls and gaining access to the sensitive data stored in the computer. The most recent example is the penetration of the computers at both the Los Alamos Research Center and the Sloan-Kettering Medical Institute by a group of teenagers. From the individuals point of new, penetration of the Sloan-Kettering Medical Institutes computer was the more serious, because the institute treats patients, teaches and trains physicians, and conducts extensive medical research. Not only was valuable research data compromised but also sensitive personal information--the individuals confidential medical information. This thesis will investigate and describe various methods used to protect the hospitals data and the equipment which stores, retrieves, and process it. Based upon this investigation, the most optimal method or methods of data and equipment protection will be recommended. Author
