Abstract:
Three problems were examined under this program. Firstly, a novel electro-optical display concept has been developed in our laboratory involving the incorporation of fluorescent emissive guest molecules into a cholesteric liquid crystal host. Improvements were made in the contrast ratios of such displays via electrochemical quenching. Secondly, a fundamental study was completed on the nature phase transitions in thermotropic liquid crystals confined in porous polymer films. Finally, new lyotropic fluid crystals were investigated to a try to develop non-aqueous lyotropic media, and b investigate orientational ordering and solubility of guest molecules in lyotropic nematics and cholesterics.
