This report is an assessment of the current and near-term sociopolitical and economic problems confronting Tanzania and their potential for internal political instability. The findings suggest that Tanzanias stability will affect its capability to participate actively in the regional economic development of the Southern Africa Development Coordination Conference. The report begins with a review of the colonial periods of Tanganyika and Zanzibar, their independence, and subsequent unification as the United Republic of Tanzania. The studys findings reflect the acute shortfalls of the Tanzanian socialist economy and its critical dependence on foreign aid, as well as Tanzanias role in East Africa and its contributions to Sub-Saharan stability.
