Abstract:
Static fatigue resistance of optical fibers has been achieved through passivation of the fiber surface by a novel CVDChemical Vapor Deposition silicon oxynitirde coating which is deposited on-line during fiber pulling. Static fatigue susceptibility less than one-sixth that of conventional fiber has been achieved. In addition, high proof stress yields have been achieved at 2.1 GPa 300,000 psi. In tests of the most recent 21,150 m of MCVDModified Chemical Vapor Deposition fiber proof tested at 2.1 GPa, nine pieces longer than 900 m passed the test.
