During the first year of the contract we have completed three sets of experiments and have collected data on two additional sets of experimental questions. The completed experiments, which have been prepared for presentation andor publication, are presented in detail within the body of the report. In general, the research to date demonstrates that cooperative studying is an effective strategy for learning basic science text and that elements of the cooperative experience appear to positively transfer to subsequent individual learning tasks. Differential impacts of elements of the cooperative strategy and individual characteristics of the participants have also been demonstrated. These latter findings have provided bases for developing principles to further improve the cooperative experience.
