Long Wavelength Limit of the Current Convective Instability.

The purpose of this paper is to present analytical and numerical results of the linear properties of the current convective instability in the long wavelength regime kL 1. The mathematical analysis is similar to that of the long wavelength limit of the E x B instability from a previous work. The author derives a relatively simple dispersion equation of the mode, and presents simple dispersion relations in both the ion collisional and ion inertial regimes. These analytical results are compared to exact numerical results. The organization of the paper is as follows 1 the derivation of a differential equation describing the mode 2 the presentation of both analytical and numerical results and 3 a summary of findings and a discussion of applications to the auroral ionosphere.
