Pagination or Media Count:
The combination of properties required from modern materials has led to the design of systems in which the bulk physical properties are obtained from the main structure and the required surface properties are provided by a surface coating. One important class of techniques for coating surfaces is Physical Vapour Deposition P.V.D.. This class includes the processes of Evaporation, Sputtering, Ion-Plating and Ion-Implantation, by which a wide variety of materials can be applied to different substrates. A review is given of the above P.V.D. processes and the resultant coating morphologies. Areas of present and future applications are discussed for which surface governed properties such as corrosion, wear, bearing and tool life, fatigue life and surface hardening can be beneficially modified.
