Reported is a development of a multi-channel fiber optic hybrid MIL-C-38999 Series IV Connector, shell size 17-6 employing size 12 fiber optic contacts to be used exclusively or in combination with electrical contacts. The fiber optic contacts are so designed as to require no changes or modifications to the connector. Contact termination requires mechanical crimping and no epoxy or index matching fluids. The removable electrical hood element is replaced with a unique fiber optic contact injection-molded alignment sleeve with the same envelope dimensions as the electrical hood element. Development work included design and fabrication of associated fiber optic contact assembly tooling, optical fiber end preparation tooling, backshell investigation, and environmental and mechanical testing in thermal shock, humidity, salt spray, sand and dust, vibration and durability. Insertion loss testing shows expected dB losses to be under 2dB. Higher losses occurred occasionally probably due to inconsistencies in the early stage of assembly tooling development. Author
