Analytical Model of Aurora Currents.

This report deals with the current flow of Birkeland currents injected into the auroral zone by solar events and penetrating through the ionosphere, strato- and troposphere to the earth surface. In the calculation of the aurora currents, the following simplifying assumptions have been made. The earths magnetic field is constant and vertical with respect to the earth surface. The problem is two dimensional. The potential function and the electric field are functions of the vertical coordinate z and one horizontal coordinate x of a Cartesian coordinate system x, y, z. The Hall current flows only in the y direction. Steady state conditions are assumed, that is, the electric functions are independent of time. The conductivity is scalar and exponential in the tropo- and stratosphere. In the ionosphere, the parallel conductivity continues to increase exponentially, whereas the Pedersen or transverse conductivity decreases. These conductivity profiles are expressed by suitable analytic functions.
