Abstract:

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the mechanical behavior i.e. strength and thermal shock resistance of silicon-carbideboron-nitride composites and to test D.P.H. Hasselmans theory for highlow modulus composites. The primary objectives of this study were, therefore, as follows to experimentally determine the material properties and thermal stress resistance parameters for SiC-BN composites, to ascertain if the thermal stress resistance of SiC is significantly improved as predicted by Hasselmans theory, and to determine how the strength of SiC-BN composites varies with changes in BN-content and temperature.
