Abstract:

Our studies provided evidence for at least three serologically distinct groups of surface antigens present on ETEC isolated from man. E. coli strains in each of the three serologic groups produce surface pili of identical size, morphology, and molecular weight. The presence of these pili shows no apparent correlation with the ability to cause MR-HA of a particular rbc types. In the year 1979, our ETEC culture collection doubled in size E. coli strains belonging to various O-groups have been found to react with our three serologic types of pili-specific antisera.
