Abstract:

The chemical composition and physical properties of charcoal, used in the manufacture of black powder, was determined. Data include elemental composition, true density, surface area, particle size distribution and volatile content. It was concluded that different samples of charcoal from a particular lot differ in composition. The suggestion was made that to produce a more predictable black powder, the charcoal will have to be more uniform and will require some preblending.
