Abstract:

Current and projected threats to surface ships in certain high threat areas of the world, e.g., the North Atlantic, suggest that alternatives to the U.S. Navys carrier-centered. This paper examines the costs and effectiveness of cruise missile equipped submarines and aircraft to replace carriers in high threat areas, and compares a number of aviation support ships for lower threat contingencies.
