The subject of this investigation has been the Free Electron Laser FEL, a device which is capable of converting the kinetic energy of a relativistic electron beam into coherent electromagnetic radiation. The investigation focused on two main topics 1 The FEL operated as an oscillator and an amplifier using variable parameter wigglers. 2 The FEL oscillator operated in conjunction with a storage ring using gain-expanded and phase area displacement wigglers. A summary and details of progress for the period October 1, 1982 - September 30, 1983 are presented.
