Abstract:

An increased emphasis during the 1970s on the design and construction of small combatant ships has led to a rapid development of alternative ships. This thesis presents a comparative analysis of several of these small combatants. The analysis uses design statistics to identify and examine the principal factors which influence small warship design. The evaluation of the designs presented in this thesis leads to the interpretation of small combatants as low-cost ships with limited missions. It is, therefore, submitted that the design of such ships should be kept simple and functional, in order to emphasize basic performance for a minimal monetary investment.
