United States Air Force Environmental Health NursesEHNs are required by regulation to provide support during peacetime natural disasters. Additionally, they are also expected to monitor shelter safety and decontamination procedures during armed conflict. Therefore, it is proposed that EHNs take an active part in civilian natural disasters, lending their expertise to the local community while providing the Air Force with valuable disaster-related public health knowledge applicable to wartime medical readiness. It is further proposed that EHNs perform epidemiological research on the long-term health effects of natural disasters. Four assessment tools are provided which are designed to measure symptomatology as related to disaster experience and demographic characteristics. Two methods of classifying natural disasters are explored which can standardize and simplify comparisons between dissimilar catastrophic events.
