A formulation is presented which incorporates linear anelastic attenuation into plane layer models in an exact manner. Several examples of body wave propagation in absorbing media are presented. The formulation is extended to both Love and Rayleigh wave propagation. Eigenvalue and surface displacement calculations for a high loss soil structure indicate that Rayleigh waves are more strongly affected by attenuation than are Love waves.
