This paper lists all known sources of oxides of nitrogen NOx in the free troposphere to enable evaluation to be made of the significance of aircraft injections of NOx for tropospheric photochemistry. Sources considered include the combustion of fossil fuels and biomass, lightning summarizing the results of a parallel study by Kowalczyk and Bauer, transport from the stratosphere, and cosmic ray ionization. The results are provided in a form convenient for two-dimensional computation with extension to three-dimensional application. Data apply to 1975, with a projection to 1990.
