Abstract:

Relatively low impurity alpha-quartz has been grown form the hydroxide mineralizer system with the use of three types of nutrient converted, special cultured and cultured. The converted nutrient resulted in the lowest total ppm level 2.6 and Al ppm level 0.5 in the as-grown crystals. Special cultured and cultured nutrients resulted in 1.7 ppm and 2.1 ppm of aluminum in crystals grown, respectively, from these nutrients. Infrared Q values ranged from 2.5x10 to the 6th power in these crystals. With respect to rho in the as-grown crystals, a ten minute etching of seeds in 7.0 molal ammonium bifluoride has resulted in the growth of the lowest etch channel density crystals approx 135sq cm.
